Bryce J. Stanley, Ph.D., Postdoctoral Research Associate

Bryce is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at CAHPR who joined Brown University following the completion of their Economics Ph.D. at the University of New Hampshire. Their primary research focus revolves around analyzing the effects of different public policies on mental health outcomes and the enhancement of the mental health care system. Additionally, Bryce's research interests extend to studying labor market outcomes for vulnerable groups, disability policy, and LGBTQ+ health.

What is your current research or work based on? What got you interested in it?

My primary research interest is in the mental health implications of various public policies with secondary interest in LGBTQ+ health and labor market outcomes of vulnerable groups. I think I am drawn to this work because of the pressing issues within our greater health care system I have been exposed to. The challenges people face when navigating mental health issues are vast but also not fully understood. Trying to improve our understanding around mental health is a tall but important task.

The end goal is always to impact policy in a way that improves people’s lives.

Bryce Stanley

What implications do you think or want your work to have?

The end goal is always to impact policy in a way that improves people’s lives. I know it takes a large combination of things to make that happen, but I am attempting to lay the groundwork to eventually achieve this goal.

Why Brown?

Brown University is filled with both people and projects that allow me to improve as a researcher. I am very excited for the opportunity and look forward to my future here.

Any advice for current Ph.D. students?

Three things come quickly to mind. The first is the importance of patience. It is very easy to want to do everything you think of as soon as you think of it. My old advisor would call it “trying to hit a five run home run with no one on base.” Granting yourself some patience can go a long way, both in terms of self care and thinking through problems in detail before starting work on them. In a similar sense, finding balance as a graduate student is very important. It is pivotal to not let the time constraints of any program rob you of who you are outside of work. Lastly, I would also suggest choosing topics and research questions that you know are important, regardless of what others say. Your lived experiences are more important than what is hot in the literature at the moment.
