About Us

The Center for Advancing Health Policy through Research (CAHPR) seeks to make fundamental contributions towards understanding and developing policies that increase affordability and value in U.S. healthcare.

Mission Statement

CAHPR seeks to make fundamental contributions towards understanding and developing policies that reduce costs, enhance patient well-being, and bring about significant transformations in how health care is provided in the U.S. This work focuses primarily on how insurance plans are designed and how they interact within the health care market. It employs a creative method that marries detailed numbers-based policy examination with legal assessment. This combined approach helps pinpoint the most viable legal and regulatory adjustments capable of making a substantial impact on the health care landscape.

Motivation

The United States spends nearly double that of peer nations on health care. Despite pockets of excellence in health care delivery, health outcomes remain far worse than our peers. In response to these challenges, the decade following the Affordable Care Act (popularly known as Obamacare) saw unprecedented experimentation with new strategies to address these needs. Extensive research on these programs has identified some key successes and failures. Yet the United States’ ability to implement new policy remains beset by two key limitations: 1) knowledge gaps as to what policies will work best; 2) poor translation of new ideas into policy.

What makes us stand out?

Going Beyond Research

Even the best policy research can have little to no influence on policy change.

However, we at CAHPR bridge the gap by transforming the knowledge gained through research into practical and actionable policies. We recognize the influence of proper timing and effective dissemination of academic research within the policymaking process and work towards engaging with key stakeholders. We collaborate with partner researchers and practitioners who possess deep expertise in policy research and the policy-making process, and together we bring a dedicated focus to effectively translating our insights into real-world reforms
